The Refrain Interview: Dolleesi

Dolleesi is an internationally recognized singer and songwriter, currently based in Los Angeles, CA. She was born in North Greece and was raised on the island of Rhodes, where her talent in music started to bloom. Dolleesi is known for her powerful vocals and her impressive range that blend harmonically with the smooth sound of her guitar and piano, creating a unique vibe that makes the audience travel through time. Creative and versatile, Dolleesi composes tracks with a rich pallet, combining elements of Pop, R&B, and electropop. Her melodic original compositions are deeply emotional and atmospheric, expressing the full depth of her inner world. Lyrics sprout from her heart, reflecting the power of feelings through the human experience.

As a professional musician, with Dual Degree in Bachelor of Music, Performance and Songwriting from Berklee College of Music, Dolleesi has a rich wealth of knowledge in performing arts, music theory and composition. She started her music education at the Melantheio Conservatory in Rhodes at the young age of 11, and then she continued her studies at the Philippos Nakas Conservatory in Athens. As a passionate teenager, devoted to music, Dolleesi decided to leave her country, to explore further in Europe and then in USA. She stopped at nothing to succeed her goals, including moving to a different continent by herself. The sacrifices she needed to make and the obstacles she had to overcome, made her a mature independent young artist, and gave her more inspiration for her original songs, arousing the interest of journalists and the press, such as Broadway World Magazine and LA Voyage.

We had a chance to catch up with Dolleesi about her new single and much more as part of our Refrain Interview series:

REFRAIN MUSIC BLOG: Tell us about the new single.

Dolleesi: Hello guys, my new Single is out and it’s called “Escape”. It’s an electropop song that reveals intense emotions and summer vibes. The lyrics are all about escaping with the metaphoric meaning of it, on an “island in the sea” -this image was on my head during the 2020, when the song first started to have a form. The need for an escape from real life during the pandemic, is what led to the mood of this song. Personally, I have felt before this passionate love that the song describes and combined with nostalgia and memories at that time, we started creating “Escape”. At the beginning of it, me and the other musicians that contributed on the Single, didn’t have a specific purpose for the song. We were just friends sharing their feelings about that hard period we were all facing. We were in distance and our emotional communication through the media was hard, so we started expressing our feelings with our music, because this is us, this is what works best for us. Sending melodies and singing our stories for a year, lead us to the creation of “Escape”. Listening to this song made us dream again and be positive so at the end, I guess we did have a personal goal from our music, to heal us and make us have faith again.

RMB: Tell us a little bit about yourself. When did you start pursuing music?

Dolleesi: I sing since I can remember myself. Singing was my way of communication with other people from a very young age, it was my way to show people how I feel and it may sound funny but I can recall in my head conversations that I couldn’t speak words and instead I was singing them. As the years went by and my passion for music was dangerously growing, at the early age of 11, I was aware of the path that I wanted to choose for the rest of my life. That was the time I decided to explore further and know everything about music, so I joined the local choir, I took piano and guitar lessons and I was preparing myself for a music discovery journey. First, I moved to Athens to study music, then in London and as a final destination of my studies I ended up in Boston, MA where I had the honor to graduate with a Dual degree in Performance and Songwriting from Berklee College of Music. I had the luck to collaborate with many artists from all over the world, experimenting in all kinds of music, such as Pop, R&b, jazz, ballads and more. My experiences so far, my consistency and my unlimited love for this art brings us to today, on the first release of my original song “Escape”.

RMB: Who are some of your biggest musical influences?

Dolleesi: I can give you a list of hundreds of artists I admire, for their talent and passion on music, the evolution they brought to the industry and the legacy they leave us on, but I will limit myself on some of the female influences of my childhood such as Christina Aguilera ,Beyonce, Arianna Grande, Jessie J and Leona Lewis. Their vocal power, the use of difficult techniques, their knowledge of music and their evolution are all astonishing and remarkable, combined with their stories and their powerful personalities, defined my perspective of music and enhanced my will for evolution. As pop female singers, it was easier for me to be attached to their music as I was growing up.

RMB: What’s the one thing you are most proud of in your career so far?

Dolleesi: I can give you a list of hundreds of artists I admire, for their talent and passion on music, the evolution they brought to the industry and the legacy they leave us on, but I will limit myself on some of the female influences of my childhood such as Christina Aguilera ,Beyonce, Arianna Grande, Jessie J and Leona Lewis. As pop female singers, it was easier for me to be attached to their music as I was growing up.  One thing I am really proud of is my new Single release. “Escape” was a dream that finally came true and I am really glad that the time to share my feelings and my original music with you has come. I hope you enjoy the vibes and escape for real, on “an island in the sea”.

RMB: If you had to pitch your music to a potential fan in less than 10 seconds, what would you say?

Dolleesi: My melodies are coming through my heart and my style is based on emotions. I believe that music has to serve a purpose, and my main purpose of creating a song is to tell a story that words can’t describe sometimes.

RMB: What’s one piece of advice you’ve gotten that you think everyone needs to hear or that has meant the most to you?

Dolleesi: I would advise you to always dream and never give up on your dreams no matter the difficulties. Overcoming obstacles make you a better person, so think positive and believe in the power you have inside you.

RMB: What’s coming up next for your musical project?

Dolleesi: An acoustic version of “Escape” is soon available on my Youtube channel and also there is a dance tutorial of “Escape” going around social media. Also, my second Single is coming up in August, which title I won’t reveal yet, but get your taste ready for something sweet.
