The Refrain Interview: Outatime!

Outatime! is a Pop Punk band from Sunny Orlando Florida! The band has released their new single, the energetic anthem “Husky Fight!”. While the music is fast and furious, lyrically, the track deals with the serious topics of anxiety and depression.

Outatime! has also released an accompanying music video for “Husky Fight!”  “The Music Video we wanted to aim to towards a PSA on Domestic Violence and Sexual abuse that has plagued our lives by the deaths of close friends, but also the rampant abuse that has been going on in the music scene for years now.” the band explains, “No one deserves to be put through a situation where they are being taken advantage of or abused by a loved one or friend. There is support for victims and their voices must always be heard and acknowledged! Love Should Never Hurt!”

We had the chance to chat with Outatime! for our interview series. Here is what went down:

Refrain Music Blog: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview. You have a new single out now. Tell us about it? What’s it called?

Nikk: The song is called “Husky Fight!”

RMB: What’s the single about?

Nikk: I had this song demo for over 7 years. It was at a time I felt I needed to express my depression and anxiety out in some way. I grew to learn that my depression and anxiety would evolve as I went over the years. This band is a group of friends who understand this struggle, and help one another overcome past issues.  The song was derived from the feeling of anxiety to the calm down of a panic attack. The feel and speed of the music came from that and a mix of my huskies energetic personalities.

RMB: Why did you decide to release it now?

James: After our last tour was cut short, we kinda collectively had a “what’s next” moment. We all sat down and thought about what we can do during these troubling times and thought about tracking new material. Nikk was sitting on this song for awhile and we thought it would be the best way to introduce the next chapter in Outatime!

RMB: What was the recording process like?

James: We tracked the single as well as our full length with Dylan at Close Quarter Recordings. The process was honestly so different than any other recording session I’ve been through. Dylan genuinely cares about pushing you to your fullest potential and making sure your walking away happy. I will say the best thing to come about recording with Dylan is him introducing me to the song HYPA HYPA by Eskimo Callboy. Listen to it…it’s a bop.

RMB: Is this single it part of a larger project at all?

Justin: It is!! This is part of our first full length album called “No Boundaries” that we are currently in the final stages of recording!

RMB: When is that album out?

Justin: To Be Determined! We are working on a few strategies for release! I think with the current market and state of affairs it’s a lot more beneficial for artists to release a series of singles over a period of time and them culminate them into an album release at a later part of the year!

RMB: How many songs are going to be on the album?

Justin: I think we finally settled on 11 total!

RMB: And this is your firs full length right?

Justin: This is our first LP as a band. We released our first EP called “Mindset” last February as a DIY Self Release. This time around we had more time (pandemic) to actually hone in on what we wanted each song to sound like. I think this LP sounds fuller and more complete!

Nikk: As Justin said, we went right into the studio after tour. We had a few songs we all worked on that just spoke to us. A lot of songs we are working on for this full length will have a lot of deep emotion. We are looking forward to sharing it with everyone joining us on this journey.

RMB: So tell us a little about the band. Who are the members and what do you each play?

Mike: It’s me on Vocals, Nikk Serrano on Bass/Vocals, James Marlowe on Guitar, Justin Robertson on Guitar and Tony Alicea on Drums,

RMB: How long have you been together? When and how did you form?

Mike: Me and Justin started the band as a side project back in 2015. They originally met on Craigslist and were in a different band in Orlando with a completely different sound. Outatime! was their creative outlet for the music they really had passion for!

RMB: Have you had any significant line up changes recently? What happened and how is everyone feeling about it?

Justin: As with most bands starting out there will always be some changes along the way! We have had a few member changes, but we are all still great friends!

Nikk: The key for us is always being there for one another. We understand life mostly takes us on different paths and we fully respect that! It’s important to one’s happiness and health.

James: The band had somewhat of a “rebirth” at the end of 2018. I remember Justin reaching out to me back in December 2018 to see if I wanted to start writing music with him and Mike. I was hesitant since I was out of the scene for so long. But after hanging out with Mike and Justin, I knew I wanted to be a part of this.

RMB: What’s the one thing you are most proud of in your career so far?

Justin: I think one of the coolest opportunities we have had was being able to open for Bayside after winning their Battle Of The Bands! It was a ton of work,  but super rewarding in the end!

James: Definitely opening up for Bayside followed by writing this full length. I’m incredibly proud of the work we put into this record.

RMB: If you had to pitch your music to a potential fan in less than 10 seconds, what would you say?

Tony: “I’d tell you about us but I only have a few seconds and we’re outatime”

Mike: Fun, fast and energetic!

James: Nostalgic and upbeat!

Justin: It’s just punk rock dude!

RMB: What’s one piece of advice you’ve gotten that you think everyone needs to hear or that has meant the most to you?

Tony: Sweep the leg.

Justin: No one is going to put the work in for you.

Mike: Embrace that which defines you.

James: Patience. It takes time to build a fan base.

RMB: If you could go back in time, what’s a piece of advice you would give to a younger you?

Tony: Do your homework.

Mike: Believe in yourself.

Justin: Keep pushing for what you want and it will happen!!

James: Do more of what makes you happy.

RMB: What’s coming up next for Outatime?

Justin: We are gearing up to finish recording our first full length record and film a couple of fun music videos!

RMB: Anything we haven’t thought of that you want to talk about? Now is the time!
