Hollow Intent is a hard rock/metal band based out of Wilmington, North Carolina. Riff heavy, high energy, and super dynamic, the band is making its presence very well known.
Hollow Intent began when guitarist, Will Baker, and drummer, Mark Davis, started jamming together and the chemistry was undeniable. Shortly after, they brought on bassist, James DesChamps and guitarist, Wesley Seven and began developing an intense sound to holster relentless and seemingly endless supply of hook and groove driven riffs they had at their disposal.
They’ve created their own breed of infectious, hard rock and metal, with a touch of groove, similar to late 90’s Rock/Metal. In August of 2018, they released their debut EP, “Monster” that featured their hit single, “Burn,” being compared to large names like Chevelle and Breaking Benjamin. In May 2019, the group was nominated for 2019 Carolina Music Award’s Best Rock Group and Best Rock Male for Will Baker. More recently, they were announced as part of the line-up for Blue Ridge Rock Festival 2020 that includes bands such as Sevendust, Static-X, August Burns Red, Killswitch Engage, Wage War, and more, that is until COVID-19 postponed the event. There were just announced as part of the line-up for Summer Bash in Indiana.
In March 2020, they released their highly anticipated single, “Superhero” that was complimented by their debut music video, filmed by cinematographer extraordinaire, Jaiden Frost. Their most recent single release “Beg & Crawl” (Heaven Help You) shows the heavy-hitting side of the band. Laden with groove riffs and a powerful message, this song tells of the struggle of good versus evil within yourself.
We had a chance to chat with the band via email as part of our interview series:
Refrain Music Blog: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview. You have a new single out now. Tell us about it? What’s it called?
Hollow Intent: The latest single out is called Beg & Crawl (Heaven Help You).
RMB: What’s the single about?
Hollow Intent:The song is about fighting you vs yourself. We all have times where making a decision never comes with a good outcome, or maybe it does.
RMB: What’s the story on how it was recorded?
Hollow Intent: Most of our music is self produced at our vocalist’s studio. We all have our own demons we wrestle with and any chance we get to cram it into 3-4 minutes of neck breaking music, we do just that.
RMB: Is it part of a larger album?
Hollow Intent: So recently, we combined all of the songs we’ve ever released into an album called Monster Relived, which Monster was the name of our debut EP.
RMB: When is that album out?
Hollow Intent: All songs are available on all platforms right now.
RMB: How many songs on the album?
Hollow Intent: 12
RMB: Tell us a little about the band. Who are the members and what do you each play?
Hollow Intent: Will Baker- Vocals, James DesChamps- Bass, Chris Knight – Guitar/Vocals, Wesley Seven – Guitar, Mark Bradley Davis – Drums
RMB: How long have you been together? When and how did you form?
Hollow Intent: We have been together for a little over 2 years now. Will was jamming with another band doing drums and was asked about restarting this band. There was some hesitation but after getting together, the magic took off from there.
RMB: Have you had any significant line up changes recently? What happened and how is everyone feeling about it?
Hollow Intent: Yes! We recently added Chris Knight (former vocalist/guitarist of Chaos By Candlelight). Will has played in a band with Chris previous to Hollow Intent. Chris provides another added dimension with harmonies and stellar guitar playing. The fans have been excited about it, asking so many questions about when they could see us all in action.
RMB: What’s the one thing you are most proud of in your career so far?
Hollow Intent: Just the impact of the music on the fans. Our music is rooted in the seeds from our own horrible experiences as people and for fans to relate and tell us they’ve listened to a song to get through their day, that’s what makes us proud to do this.
RMB: If you had to pitch your music to a potential fan in less than 10 seconds, what would you say?
Hollow Intent: If you like early 90’s/late 2000’s hard rock/metal, a heavier Breaking Benjamin, Chevelle, and want to throw down, take a listen and join our family of fans we call “Parasites” (named after one of our songs).
RMB: What’s one piece of advice you’ve gotten that you think everyone needs to hear or that has meant the most to you?
Hollow Intent: Success is not an accident and neither is failure. It doesn’t just happen. It takes hard work, dedication, and unwavering focus.
RMB: If you could go back in time, what’s a piece of advice you would give to a younger you?
Hollow Intent: Start earlier and save your money!! LOL
RMB: What’s coming up next for your musical project?
Hollow Intent: We are currently writing a ton of songs for what will be our largest release yet!
RMB: Anything we haven’t thought of that you want to talk about?
Hollow Intent: Now is the time! If you’re a musician, never give up! It’s also never too late to start. If you want to jam out, do it! If you want to go the distance, you’ll find a way to do it. If you’re a fan, dig deep into the band and their history. Every musician’s career is like a house and each fan is just another brick to the foundation.
