The Refrain Interview: Telling Secrets

Telling Secrets mastermind Vik Kovacs is a true global musician. Kovacs is the product of Eastern European blood and a British upbringing. Hailing from Manchester, England, but living in Los Angeles, Kovacs is releasing his brand of Emo tinged modern rock bangers under the name Telling Secrets for the past two years.

We had the chance to ask Telling Secrets a couple questions. Check it out below.

Refrain Music Blog: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview. You have a new single out now. Tell us about it? What’s it called?

Telling Secrets: What’s up? Thank you! The single is called Fragile

RMB: What’s the single about?

Telling Secrets: It’s originally about making a decision between telling someone your true feelings or shielding them because they wouldn’t be able to handle it either emotionally or mentally.

RMB: What’s the story on how it was recorded?

Telling Secrets: I recorded the vocals in Canton House Studios with Rachel Blum who is a really awesome engineer usually working with mainstream artists like Meg Thee Stallion but we have a lot of common ground in the rock world – usually I’d go in at like 11pm – 4am when no one has the studio booked out and we get to work.

RMB: Is it part of a larger album?

Telling Secrets: I’m not exactly sure but I would be quite happy to collect a handful of my songs when they are released and group them together in an EP.

RMB: How does this single differ from your previous work?

Telling Secrets: I’d say this is like a combination of flavours from my previous songs. Definitely have some influence from “The Fall” in its darkness but also some vibes from “Lullaby” in the pop aspects.

RMB: Who are some of your biggest musical influences?

Telling Secrets: Escape the Fate, My Chemical Romance, Falling in Reverse and Nothing More are the ones that come to mine straight away.

RMB: What’s the one thing you are most proud of in your career so far?

Telling Secrets: I am quite happy with hitting 100,000 streams collectively! I definitely have much higher goals but it is a good start.

RMB: If you had to pitch your music to a potential fan in less than 10 seconds, what would you say?

Telling Secrets: I’d ask if they like bragging about knowing good bands before they blow up because if so…

RMB: What’s one piece of advice you’ve gotten that you think everyone needs to hear or that has meant the most to you?

Telling Secrets: Never fix ‘it’ later, this is mainly for recordings, manage expectations because it can affect your happiness and if you are comparing yourself to anyone you need to be able to back your claims up.

RMB: If you could go back in time, what’s a piece of advice you would give to a younger you?

Telling Secrets: Don’t go to law school.

RMB: What’s coming up next for your musical project?

Telling Secrets: I really want to push for 1 million streams this year collectively. I’d love to have a new music video, and expand my team to work with new people as well as potentially perform in Europe.
