Minneapolis Indie-Pop duo Stockmarket Cinema has just released their new track “Wasting Time”. The track is a dreamy slice of indie-pop featuring clean, reverebed guitars, great pop production and heart-on-sleeve lyrics, perfect for fans of COIN, AJR, and Glass Animals.
We had a chance to catch up with them as part of our The Refrain Interview series.
Refrain Music Blog: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview. You have a new single out now. Tell us about it? What’s it called?
Justin: The song is called Wasting Time. The story on how we recorded is kind of interesting. Dawson sent me this chorus idea he had been sitting on for awhile, and I fell in love with it. The process of recording started from there, we re-recorded guitars and I tracked drums. We let it cook for awhile not knowing where to go with the ending.
I decided I wanted to create something that was exciting and changes the tone of the song completely.
RMB: What’s the single about?
Dawson: The song is about procrastination and not doing anything about the problems that are clear and visible. It’s pretty straight forward, but I sort of examined where I was in life and what I was doing, and the song just came. I also wrote the lyrics with larger systemic and societal issues in mind. It’s really a call to action to take care of the things we’ve been ignoring for too long, (climate change, inequality, etc.)
RMB: What’s the story on how it was recorded?
Dawson: We recorded the whole song remotely between our two apartments. I recorded the guitar and vocals, Justin did the rest. He really is the mastermind behind all of the production. He also mixed it, and then it was mastered by Bruce Templeton over at Microphonic Mastering.
RMB: Tell us a little about the band. Who are the members and what do you each play?
Justin: I play drums in the band, and Dawson sings and plays guitar, but for recording we both do everything. You’ll find me singing and playing guitar, and you’ll find Dawson playing bass and writing drums.
RMB: How long have you been together? When and how did you form?
Dawson: We’ve been friends and collaborating on music for about 2 years, but the band has only been official for about a month!
RMB: What’s the one thing you are most proud of in your career so far?
Justin: I think the thing I am most proud of right now for this project is the new material we have. I cannot wait to show everyone.
Dawson: For me it’s our music video for this song. I was stoked to finally be a part of a cool music video with a storyline. Justin’s wife shot most of it, and Justin did all the editing. He really killed it.
RMB: If you had to pitch your music to a potential fan in less than 10 seconds, what would you say?
Dawson: Indie pop with a lot of energy. If that sounds appealing at all, we’re your band.
RMB: What’s one piece of advice you’ve gotten that you think everyone needs to hear or that has meant the most to you?
Dawson: A friend told me that I need to take some time for myself and rest a bit more often. I think it’s easy to overwork ourselves mentally and physically, so it’s really important to give yourself a break and be more patient with yourself.
RMB: If you could go back in time, what’s a piece of advice you would give to a younger you?
Dawson: Always take time to remind yourself to enjoy the moment you’re in. Don’t dwell on the past, sure, but even more importantly, don’t dwell on the future.
RMB: What’s coming up next for your musical project?
Dawson: We have more material to release. You’ll see a bit more of us in 2021, and A LOT more of us in 2022.
RMB: Anything we haven’t thought of that you want to talk about? Now is the time!
Justin: We have new music coming soon, so follow us on Spotify!
