With catchy hooks and relatable lyrics, STFLR has proven that pop punk can be more than songs about leaving your hometown or leaving your girlfriend. With a brand new sound aided by years of experience, STFLR is a breath of fresh air the scene needs.
We had a chance to chat with STFLR on their new single, which released on Friday, as part of our The Refrain Interview: series.
Refrain Music Blog: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview. You have a new single out now. Tell us about it? What’s it called?
Nick: No problem! Our first single just released on8/20/21 and it’s called Lessons Learned.
RMB: What’s the single about?
Nick: It’s a song about people who take kindness for weakness. It’s about opportunists who only gain something from a situation, and how we feel after we’ve been used.
RMB: What’s the story on how it was recorded?
Nick: So this is a riff our guitarist Anthony has had for a little bit. It always had really good bones and Ant is so good at writing those catchy riffs and leads. We recorded this single and the rest of rhe EP at Westfall Recording Company with Anthony Lopardo and Ray Marte of Moon Tooth.
RMB: Is it part of a larger album?
Nick: Yeah, so this single is the first off our sophomore EP titled A Collection of Bad Ideas.
RMB: When is that album out?
Nick: It streams wherever you get your music on 9/10/2021!
RMB: How many songs on the album?
Nick: It’s a 4 song EP but don’t let the short track list fool you. It’s some of the best stuff we’ve yet to put out.
RMB: Is this your first album?
Nick: So this is actually our second EP. We released our first EP titled Flaccid and Unused in September 2019. That is available to stream right now!
RMB: Tell us a little about the band.
Nick: I’m the vocalist. Yianni plays guitar along with Anthony. Ryan is the bass player and we also play in Quiet Like A Thief Together, too! And Angelo rounds it out on drums.
RMB: How long have you been together?
Nick: we’ve been a band since 2019. I wrote one song like in 2018 that I didn’t really plan on doing anything with, but as started getting more comfortable writing again, I asked Yianni and Anthony if they had any interest in recording a 4 song ep. The 3 of us have been playing together in various bands on and off since 2007 so we are super familiar and comfortable with each other’s play styles and we have great chemistry. From there the ep released and we heard something special in the songs and asked Angelo and Ryan to join shortly after, and the rest is history.
RMB: What’s the one thing you are most proud of in your career so far?
Nick: Honestly, I truly feel this ep is the best stuff we’ve written to date and We’re super proud of it.
RMB: If you had to pitch your music to a potential fan in less than 10 seconds, what would you say?
Nick: I love this question! Ok so picture the spirit of the greatest high school house party you’ve ever been to. Take that energy and that’s what we want our music to sound like. Nostalgia.
RMB: What’s one piece of advice you’ve gotten that you think everyone needs to hear or that has meant the most to you?
Nick: That’s tough…I guess it would just be if your passionate about something never quit. I really didn’t think I would play music at a professional lever again after I stopped at age 23 but here I am 10 years later making the best music of my life. So never quit!
RMB: If you could go back in time, what’s a piece of advice you would give to a younger you?
Nick: Don’t be so angry. Life is short. Enjoy the ride. Drink more water.
RMB: What’s coming up next for your musical project?
Nick: we have plans to shoot a video in September and we really can’t wait to get out there and play shows again!
RMB: Anything we haven’t thought of that you want to talk about? Now is the time!
Nick: I can’t tell you how happy is makes us that people listen to our band. That was the goal from the start, just to have people listen to what we have to say. So thank you to anyone who likes what we do!
