Boston/Long Island pop punk outfit Quiet Like A Thief have just released their latest album, Through The Looking Glass. Big hooks, heart-on-sleeve lyricism, cascading and beautifully presented melodic rock production adorns the EP, sure to make them a household name in the pop punk scene.
On release day, the band has released the track “Downward Spiral” as a single. The song features Nick Thompson of Hit The Lights and was produced by Alan Day of Four Year Strong. Lyrically, the track focuses on anxiety, depression and getting lost inside of your own head.
We had a chance to talk to the band about new album and single as part of our Refrain Interview series.
Refrain Music Blog: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview. You have a new single out now. Tell us about it? What’s it called?
Alex: Yes we do! The single is called ‘Travel in Time’ and it is the featured track off of our debut EP.
RMB: What’s the single about?
Alex: The band was born in tragedy, and throughout 2020, loved ones were lost, difficult and strange happenings were faced, and we just couldn’t help but feel lost. The song is about wishing we could travel in time, whether it be to the past or future, to happier and/or much simpler times. However, through a life that felt like it was crumbling through our fingers, time eventually heals, and it is important to remember that there is a light at the end of the tunnel, no matter how dark.
RMB: What’s the story on how it was recorded? The Who, When, Where etc. Was it a long process or quick? Any good stories about the recording process?
Alex: Crazy enough, the song (including our debut EP) was all done remotely. I live in the Boston area now, while the rest of the band is located on Long Island, NY. All parts were recording at our own studios during COVID, and then sent to Alan Day of Four Year Strong, who produced, mixed, and mastered everything. Pre-production was accomplished via phone and Zoom meetings, and regardless of the situation that was at stake, we could not be any happier with the final result. It is wild to think this was all done remotely, but it’s also a great story to tell.
RMB: Is it part of a larger album? If so, tell us about that.
Alex: Yes, ‘Travel in Time’ is the featured single off of our debut EP “Through the Looking-Glass” which we felt did a good job at tying old and modern influences of pop punk, while keeping a sound unique to us in efforts to stand out in the crowd.
RMB: When is that album out?
Alex: The EP released on June 25th, 2021 and is available wherever you stream or download music.
RMB: How many songs on the album?
Alex: There are 5 tracks total on the EP.
RMB: Is this your first album? If not tell us about your previous work and how this differs from your previous work.
Alex: Yes, this is our debut EP and first collection of songs as a whole band. We have released two singles prior, but the songs on this EP certainly are our best to date. Although short and sweet, I believe that it showcases us as musicians the way we have always wanted in the past. Influences from each member and our favorite bands is evident, while keeping an original flair on each song.
RMB: Tell us a little about the band. Who are the members and what do you each play?
Alex: Myself (Alex Kouvaris) vocalist, lyricist, songwriter
Ryan Sweeney – Bassist, lyricist, songwriter
Mike Marziliano – Lead guitarist
Nick Lopardo – Rhythm guitarist
Dan Marchelewski – Drums
RMB: How long have you been together? When and how did you form?
Alex: We have been together over a year now, since March of 2020. After the passing of my father due to COVID, Ryan and I decided to make this project a full-time gig. We started writing, recording, and finding members who we thought fit the mold. Ryan and I have been in bands before and have remained good friends ever since. The rest of the members are also friends of ours, and we joke that Quiet Like A Thief is a supergroup, because they’re also associated with other bands. This band certainly brings out the best in us all and is a great way to channel our emotions.
RMB: Have you had any significant line up changes recently? What happened and how is everyone feeling about it?
Alex: No significant line up changes, but as mentioned above, we did start out as a duo, and are now official a five-piece with some of the best dudes we could ever ask for.
RMB: What’s the one thing you are most proud of in your career so far?
Alex: Without a doubt, becoming a serious band, writing, recording, and releasing a 5-song EP during a worldwide pandemic.
RMB: If you had to pitch your music to a potential fan in less than 10 seconds, what
would you say?
Alex: Check us out if anyone is fans of The Story So Far, Four Year Strong and The Starting Line!
RMB: What’s one piece of advice you’ve gotten that you think everyone needs to hear or that has meant the most to you?
Alex: Pursue what you are most passionate about and never think that anything is impossible. We just released our debut EP during a devastating pandemic, and all remotely! Nothing but up from here.
RMB: If you could go back in time, what’s a piece of advice you would give to a younger you?
Alex: LEARN EVERYTHING ABOUT THE INDUSTRY! I was so caught up in playing shows and spending money on recordings that I forgot about what is most important: your presence and your fanbase. If I could go back in time, I would have marketed past projects like crazy. Especially being in high school, or recently out of college, I had so much free time on my hands that I no longer have.
RMB: What’s coming up next for your musical project?
Alex: We have an official music video which was directed by the very talented Tom Flynn for our song ‘Travel in Time’ which is scheduled to release middle of July. Additionally, we’re flying out to Los Angeles at the end of July to perform our song ‘Travel in Time’ on Season 3 of Sounds of the Underground – an alternative music showcase on Amazon Prime, CBS affiliates, and other networks. Past artists have included August Burns Red, Alesana and Craig Owens.
RMB: Anything we haven’t thought of that you want to talk about? Now is the time!
Alex: We’re basically on every form of social media and music streaming platform out there! If you are just finding out about us, give us a shot, and if you like what you hear, make sure to like, follow and subscribe. We love connecting with new fans and are always down to talk. Thanks for checking us out!
