ASAVA is an alternative rock band formed in 2017 in Canton, Ohio. A group of childhood friends with dreams of rocking legendary stages, ASAVA has come out swinging with their new hard-hitting new single, “25“. ASAVA delivers melodic and groove-driven riffs glued to a dynamic rhythm section coloring a soundscape fronted with powerful and introspective vocal delivery.
We had a chance to chat with Liam about the new single as part of our Refrain Interview Series.
Refrain Music Blog: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview. You have a new single out now. Tell us about it?
Liam: Well, the song is called ’25’ in reference to the age at which I wrote it.
RMB: What’s the single about?
Liam: 25 was a rough age for me. Like many of us, I experienced a high level of anxiety over the pandemic, and this song is my release of that anxiety.
RMB: What’s the story on how it was recorded?
Liam: The song was recorded by our good friend Jacob Shar over the process of a week in late 2021. He brought his mobile recording studio to my parent’s basement. It was the easiest and most fun experience recording with Jacob. When we tracked the vocals for the chorus, after the first take I took my headphones off and everyone in the room’s jaws dropped. It was an amazing feeling for me to get that kind of response from the guys.
RMB: This single sounds a little different than your previous work.
Liam: This is an extreme departure from the first record. The whole point of this next record is to shift our sound and writing style.

RMB: Tell us a little about the band.
Liam: THe band is Liam Brocious (Vocals/Guitar) Greg Cochran (Bass) Daniel Kohr (Drums) RC Albright (Guitar) and Zachary Rusher (Guitar). We’ve all been writing together for a little over ten years. We’ve been in a number of bands together that all culminated into ASAVA.
RMB: Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
Liam: Dave Grohl, Maynard James Kennan, Chris Cornell, Karnivool, Billie Eillish

RMB: If you had to pitch your music to a potential fan in less than 10 seconds, what would you say?
Liam: Stadium rock for the modern listener. Foo Fighters if they were Deftones.
RMB: What’s one piece of advice you’ve gotten that you think everyone needs to hear or that has meant the most to you?
Liam: Just don’t give up. If you really want it, don’t give up.
RMB: If you could go back in time, what’s a piece of advice you would give to a younger you?
Liam: Honestly, I think I would rather take advice from my younger self. That kid knew how to rock.
RMB: What’s coming up next for your musical project?
Liam: We have a number of shows lined up this year. Working on the next release. We have a few pieces of content we’re excited to show everyone.
RMB: Anything we haven’t thought of that you want to talk about? Now is the time!
Liam: We want to talk with Rick Rubin, can anyone help us make that happen?
