7 Stone Riot have just unleashed their newest single, ‘Manipulation’, a modern rock track with heavy riffs, a catchy chorus, a killer groove, and production reminiscent of the best of Tool. The song, produced by Ken Lanyon (Shinedown, Needtobreathe, Crossfade) is about coming to terms with out the outside forces that mold a person’s beliefs. We had a chance to speak with vocalist White Millsap about the single, the video form which you can view below:
Refrain Music Blog: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview. You have a new single out now. Tell us about it? What’s it called?
Whit Millsap: Yes, we just released our new single Manipulation earlier this month.
RMB: What’s the single about?
Whit Millsap: The main point we’re trying to make with our new single Manipulation is every single person living is manipulated by something whether they want to believe it or not. I am the way I am because I was manipulated to believe the things I believe and if you lived my life with the same manipulations you would have the same beliefs. Just like I would have totally different beliefs if I was manipulated like someone else
RMB: What’s the story on how it was recorded? The Who, When, Where etc. Was it a long process or quick? Any good stories about the recording process?
Whit Millsap: When we first started the recording process for manipulation it was back in April when everything was shut down. We had to do something completely different and do the entire recording process on our own since none of the studios were open at the time. Everything we recorded on this song was done in Reid’s (lead guitar) garage. We went and transformed his entire garage into a makeshift studio with a vocal booth made out of moving pads. We then went to a local studio owned by Eric Bates called Bates Brothers Recording, and recorded all the drum parts. Once we were satisfied with all of the recordings we then sent it to our producer Ken Lanyon in Stone Mountain Georgia so he could mix it and put all his magic on it. In the end we were more satisfied with the way this recording sounded than any other recording we’ve ever done in an actual studio
RMB: Is it part of a larger album? If so, tell us about that.
Whit Millsap: As of right now this is just a single we released but we do plan on releasing an album by sometime next year. With everyone on lockdown all summer we wanted to at least get one song released before the summer was over.
RMB: Tell us a little about the band. Who are the members and what do you each play?
Whit Millsap: We are a 5 piece hard rock band from Birmingham, Alabama. The members of the band consists of Whit Millsap (Lead Singer), Reid Aldridge (Lead Guitar), Todd Millsap (Rhythm Guitar), Tyler Millsap (Bass), and Skylar McCain (Drums)
RMB: How long have you been together? When and how did you form?
Whit Millsap: Me, Tyler and Reid have been in the band since 2014, Todd joined in 2016, and Skylar joined in 2019. Before the band started I was playing acoustic covers at small coffee shops and pizza parlors and Reid saw one of my videos posted and sent me a message asking if I wanted to come jam with him one day, and after the first time me and Tyler went to Reid’s house to jam we all decided we should start a band.
RMB: Have you had any significant line up changes recently? What happened and how is everyone feeling about it?
Whit Millsap: There hasn’t been too many significant lineup changes just changing drummers constantly. I think we’re on number 7 now.
RMB: What’s the one thing you are most proud of in your career so far?
Whit Millsap: So far manipulation is what I’m most proud of. We took a totally different route with this song that challenged all of us. Every person in the band had influence in every part of the song whether it be a guitar part, melody, or lyric. We also have an awesome video guy Brandon Jones that helped the song come to life with a cinematic music video that was one of the most fun things I’ve ever been apart of. Instead of hiring a bunch of actors we hired one (Katherine Looney) and we all played the other parts. I was the plague doctor and Reid Todd Tyler and Skylar were all the “manipulators.”
RMB: What’s coming up next for your musical project?
Whit Millsap: We’re always working on new music. Our plan for right now is to do what we did with Manipulation. We want to have a new song recorded with a video by the beginning of next year and hopefully sometime next year drop an EP.
RMB: Anything we haven’t thought of that you want to talk about? Now is the time
Whit Millsap: Make sure you check us out & follow/like us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for updates about new releases and shows! Subscribe to our YouTube channel and check out the video for Manipulation!
