For Worcester, Massachusetts hard rock band Young Other, the decision to write and release an acoustic version of their single ‘Between The Few’, was a happy accident. “Throughout the course of being on the road throughout 2019, we found ourselves in Fort Wayne, Indiana at the Sweetwater Headquarters a day before our show in Muncie,” they explain, “Brandon and Devin found themselves in the acoustic play room tossing ideas back and forth on a somewhat swing/classical acoustic idea for Between The Few and presented it to both Adam and Dale. We felt it sat with us as we were approaching the new 20’s decade, one hundred years after the roaring 20’s.”
The single is the title track off of Young Other’s debut EP. Since it’s release, it has racked up over 25k plays on Spotify and over 5k views on YouTube. The band began 2019 with sold out shows alongside Saving Abel and Tantric. This set the pace as Young Other began to travel throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States making their debut appearance in NY, IN, PA, NC, WV, while sharing the stage with bands such as Puddle of Mudd, Mushroomhead, and Blacktop Mojo.
We had the opportunity to chat with Young Other about the new single. You can see the video below:
Refrain Music Blog: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview. You have a new single out now. Tell us about it? What’s it called?Â
Young Other: Thank you for taking the time to interview us. We released our new single, “Between The Few (Acoustic)”, on September 25th, which was the final piece to our Between The Few Chapter that started in August of 2019.
RMB: What’s the single about?Â
YO: Between The Few highlights the war between darkness and light, happiness and depression, and anything good and bad. It’s the feeling of being stuck in the middle of important choices in your life that you either want for yourself, or that society is expecting from you. We took the original version of Between The Few and delivered a dark, acoustic swing approach to the song both instrumentally, and visually with our music video, which helped portray a much darker ending to this Chapter that resonates with this period of time in our lives.
RMB: What’s the story on how it was recorded? The Who, When, Where etc. Was it a long process or quick? Any good stories about the recording process?Â
YO: Throughout the course of being on the road throughout 2019, we found ourselves in Fort Wayne, Indiana at the Sweetwater Headquarters a day before our show in Muncie. Brandon and Devin found themselves in the acoustic play room tossing ideas back and forth on a somewhat swing/classical acoustic idea for Between The Few and presented it to both Adam and Dale. We felt it sat with us as we were approaching the new 20’s decade, one hundred years after the roaring 20’s.
RMB: Tell us a little about the band. Who are the members and what do you each play?Â
YO: Young Other consists of four individuals who have joined together as a family in using their gifts to write songs that resonate with not only each other, but others who are enduring similar situations in life. Dale Belliveau is the Vocalist and Lyricist, Brandon Hursey is the Guitarist, Devin Stetson is the Bassist and Back Up Vocalist, and Adam Neufell is the Drummer.
RMB: How long have you been together? When and how did you form?Â
YO: Dale and Brandon grew up with each other when they were kids, and went separate ways in highschool but formed their own bands. A couple years after they graduated, they formed Young Other in late 2016. After playing some shows and releasing a DIY recorded demo EP, the band took a short hiatus. The lineup was solidified with the addition of Devin Stetson in May of 2018, and Adam Neufull in June of 2019.Â
RMB: What’s the one thing you are most proud of in your career so far?
YO: We’d have to say the family that has grown around us over the past year. We have met so many amazing people that have become the biggest parts of our lives up and down the eastern part of the US, and we couldn’t be more thankful for them.
RMB: If you had to pitch your music to a potential fan in less than 10 seconds, what would you say?
YO: That Young Other is like Alice in Chains meets Shinedown.Â
RMB: What’s one piece of advice you’ve gotten that you think everyone needs to hear or that has meant the most to you?
YO: Remain true to yourselves, and never forget where you came from, it’s important.Â
RMB: If you could go back in time, what’s a piece of advice you would give to a younger you?
YO: Have patience, everything will fall into place the way that it was designed to.
RMB: What’s coming up next for your musical project?
YO: With the closing of our Between The Few Chapter with the release of Between the Few (Acoustic), our eyes are looking forward to the release of our re-recorded Luminous Element DIY EP. Over quarantine, we spent the time tracking all of the Luminous Element songs with our new gear and technology to give them a new chance at life. Starting October 23rd, we’ll be releasing a song off “Luminous Element: ReIgnited” every two to three weeks all the way through January with upcoming live streams, and content surprises.Â
RMB: Anything we haven’t thought of that you want to talk about? Now is the time!
YO: As winter approaches, we’ve been eagerly awaiting to share what we have been working on all summer that will carry us into the moment getting back on the road in 2021 to begin a brand new chapter of our lives that we’ve been so excited to share with everyone.Â
