Joshua Idehen’s latest EP, Mum Does The Washing, is a profound exploration of human connection, resilience, and self-reflection, wrapped in a tapestry of spoken word, soulful melodies, and club-ready beats. Known for his collaborations with The Comet Is Coming and Sons of Kemet, Idehen here teams up with producer Ludvig Parment, seamlessly merging poetic storytelling with electronic textures in four distinct tracks.
The title track, “Mum Does The Washing,” is a beautifully simple yet powerful ode to maternal wisdom, presented with warmth and humor. Idehen’s spoken word delivery captures universal truths through an intimate, almost meditative cadence, creating an experience as comforting as it is enlightening.
With “Tactics For Survival,” Idehen brings a rhythmic, meditative feel, propelled by Estonian pianist Hanakiv’s minimalist piano. This track, born during the pandemic, examines the universal theme of coping and managing change—a perfect blend of lyrical depth and danceable beats.

“This was the very first thing Ludvig and I worked on during the pandemic. I was obsessed with “coping”: how different cultures, communities and people dealt with living under lockdown. We shelved it for a while until we met the amazing pianist Hanakiv at a festival. She sent us some of her piano stems and when Ludvig made a track from them, it felt like the right home for the verse,” says Idehen of “Tactics For Survival”.
The other two tracks “Could Be Forever” and an inventive cover of Talking Heads’ “Once In A Lifetime” further show off Joshua Idehen’s creative diversity. It all leaves listeners with a sense of gratitude and wonder. Mum Does The Washing is an evocative, genre-blending work that invites listeners to reflect, dance, and connect.
