Katie Wighton Celebrates Joyful Moments in Her Life with “Real Thing”

Katie Wighton, known for her role as guitarist and vocalist in the ARIA-award-winning folk band All Our Exes Live in Texas, has returned to her solo project with “Real Thing.” This release marks a significant shift from the melancholic tones typically found in songwriting, presenting a bright and genuine exploration of happiness.

All the way back in 2019, Katie Wighton began focusing on her solo career, releasing an EP in 2020 that featured the widely acclaimed single “You Act Like A Child.” Her songwriting talents have led her to collaborate with artists like Colin Hay, Jenny Owen-Youngs, and Jake Sinclair. Previously, her part in folk-inspired band All Our Exes Live in Texas, received significant acclaim. Amongst the highlights, the band won the ARIA Award for Best Blues & Roots Album in 2017 for their debut, When We Fall.

Today Katie Wighton’s music stands out in the indie landscape, with “Real Thing” offering an uplifting reprieve with its honest depiction of everyday happiness. The single showcases her growth as a solo artist and reinforces her ability to connect with listeners through authentic storytelling. The artist draws inspiration from the small, joyful moments of her own life, creating a song that feels both personal and universally relatable.

“It felt so good to write a happy song for once in my life! Real Thing is not about sugarcoating things though. It’s about the ups and downs and all-arounds. It’s about the holidays in Canada and the trips to Ireland; the tears and the makeup kisses; it’s about real love. My partner produced this song which made it all the more special. Writing the chorus of this song didn’t take long at all. I have been playing a LOT in open D tuning in the last couple of years and this is no different. The verses took me a little longer – I tried so hard to make them personal and not too cheesy.” – Katie Wighton
