Refrain Interview: Rushing Spring

Rushing Spring is an emo influenced indie rock band formed in 2018 from New England. Influenced not only by modern indie and emo bands such as The 1975, Taking Back Sunday, The Killers, and The Story So Far, Rushing Spring also draw on classic 80’s college rock such as The Replacements and 70’s Power-pop like Big Star to create their very own brand of anthemic indie rock.

We had the chance to catch up with the band to discuss their new single.

Refrain Music Blog: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview. You have a new single out now. What’s it called?

Hey there! Our new single is called “Your Touch”.

RMB: What is the song about, in terms of lyrics?

I’d say the song is about obtaining closure in a relationship. Looking back, I’d say the lyrics are quite meditative in a way, contemplating whether residual feelings of the relationship were true or not- like, do I miss you, or just your touch? Either way, it’s a good old fashioned breakup song!

RMB: Is this single part of an album? If so tell us a little bit about that.

Yes! Your Touch is the single off our upcoming EP “Echoes” that drops 7/14. This EP was super fun to make, and point blank a kind of pivot for us, breaking out of the DIY pop-punk scene and moving to a kind of more mature polished indie rock.

RMB: How does this single differ from your previous work?

Like I just briefly mentioned, the whole record was definitely a pivot for us genre-wise. With this song specifically we went for a more chic, polished midtempo indie vibe taking inspiration from bands like The Killers and The 1975

RMB: What’s the story on how it was recorded?

So this song was actually a last minute add to the record! I wrote it a couple of days before we were slated to go and record at Pharoah Studios (Plainville, CT). I texted the demo over to Eric and Rob and they all were like, “this HAS to be on the record”. They actually ended up writing their parts during the tracking session because it was so last minute, so it’s been a really special song for us to see it come together the way it did.

RMB: Tell us a little about the band. Who all is in it and how did you form? How long have you been together?

We’ve been together in some iteration for almost 5 years now, with me on vocals and guitar and Eric on drums, about two years ago Robbie joined us on guitar which was when I personally felt we began transitioning from a local band to something more professional and started touring. Our most recent addition has been Matt on bass, and he’s been a lot of fun to work with too. At the end of the day, we’re all brothers and it’s been a blast to get to make music with my best friends.

RMB: Who are some of your biggest musical influences?

Oh boy, are we listing bands? We’re constantly listening to and finding stuff we love. Recently, I know Eric and Rob have been on a Fiddlehead kick. We love older post punk and college rock bands like The Replacements, New Order, The Cure- but we listen to a lot of indie and rock like The Killers, The 1975, Bleachers, Beach House etc. Also can’t forget our punk roots with old punk like The Clash or Minor Threat and newer pop punk and emo like Joyce Manor, The Story So Far, Hot Mulligan and Turnover.

RMB: What’s the one thing you are most proud of in your career so far?

Probably this song.

RMB: If you had to pitch your music to a potential fan in less than 10 seconds, what would you say?

If you like heart on your sleeve, anthemic emo influenced indie, with polished recordings and raw live performances we’re the band for you.

RMB: What’s one piece of advice you’ve gotten that you think everyone needs to hear or that has meant the most to you?

If you’re gonna do it, do it big. Just do it, but take your time and make sure your hearts in it and push it as hard as you can. Money comes and goes, but so does opportunities. Don’t skip out because you’re scared of investing in yourself. Better to fail than to spend the rest of your life wondering, what if?

RMB: If you could go back in time, what’s a piece of advice you would give to a younger you?

Just keep writing. And numbers don’t mean anything on a screen. If it’s good, people will come. Hang in there and keep doing your thing- and go live your life! The more experiences you experience, the better your writing becomes.

RMB: What’s coming up next for your musical project?

We’re going on tour in August! Our specific dates will be announced soon but know that it’s an East Coast US tour. After that, not too sure- although we’ve got a bunch of really cool unrecorded songs right now, so maybe a record?
