It is no surprise to hear yet another masterpiece from The Horn themselves, hot on the heels of their outstanding release ‘Passion’, they have gone and done it again with fresh new tune ‘Always Late’. While still maintaining its signature sound, the band reveals an entirely new side of its identity, showcasing vulnerability and reflection.
This refined number evokes an essential tranquility, it is understated in a masterful manner. Dancing around dreamy strings, docile guitar rhythms, delicate key motifs, Jonny Taylor’s profound tone recounts the bane of his and Nick’s existence: always being late – which also extends beyond the practical instances in life, unveiling that time is a precarious, fleeting and uncontrollable force.

While the theme of ‘Always Late’ is melancholic, there is a sweet glimpse of serenity at the heart of the vocals which, reassuringly, reach a simple state of contentment, as if to welcome the thought that ‘it is what it is’. This deeply profound meaning is layered beautifully in the arrangement, making ‘Always Late’ a pleasure for listeners to dissect.
It is refreshing to witness solid songcraft from artists whose ambitions are the art itself and the growth that comes with it. We could all learn a thing or two from The Horn, except always being late maybe.
