“This was one of those songs that didn’t take a lot from me in the studio to cut out. Another day, August Ingram and I just hit the studio, listening to records and passing around instruments, riffing off – I came up with the little guitar loop, and started humming what ended up becoming the hook.”
As a musician, there’s nothing that puts you on a high as much as a spontaneous songwriting session. As a listener, there is nothing more delightful than consuming the music created during said session. Coming from the ‘Bloom’ EP, Johnny Kulo’s ‘Loyal’ is exactly that! It’s also going to be our summer soundtrack – the perfect background for every late night drive during the warm months. Every element is alluring and addictive. Thank goodness for the loop button!

“The whole song was written as I was recording it, and initially I intended to just record the first idea so I can go away to write something ‘substantial’. But then I decided, fuck it, this is what I’m going thru right now and it’s expressed exactly in that way. Not every verse needs to be premeditated, sometimes it sounds less clever the more it’s polished you know?”
The spontaneity is prevalent and provides an effortless quality to the music. The guitar is alive, might we dare say it feels rather flirty? The bass reaches out and pulls you in, the beat enthrals you, and those synths at the end – ugh so good! Johnny and August are the dream team and they have created flawless work. Not to mention the whole of the ‘Bloom’ EP, the pair deliver one hit after the other with an impressive consistency.
“I was just talking stupid, talking about tryna stay loyal but having too many distractions in my lifestyle.”
Don’t we all love a good tune about complicated relationships? There’s nothing quite like an honest piece of writing to win us over! We are loyal to this song and will not stop chanting it any time soon.
