Canton, Ohio, alt rock band I Fight Fail has released their newest single, the darkly anthemic “Faded”. The song features AJ Perdomo of The Dangerous Summer, giving the emo-influenced track an even sharper edge. On “Faded,” the band offers some of what modern emo does best – heartfelt lyricism capitulated into dueling vocal performances over post-punk/alt-rock heaviness.

We had a chance to talk to the band as part of our Refrain Interview Series.

Refrain Music Blog: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview. You have a new single out now. Tell us about it? What’s it called? 

Our newest single “FADED” is the first song we’ve released in over TWO YEARS!!! Crazy right?  We’ve been so ready to get new music out that we are going crazy!!! 

RMB: What’s the single about? 

It’s all about masking your pain or depression with substance abuse. Waking up and realizing it’s time to make a change.

RMB: What’s the story on how it was recorded?

We recorded it really quick, to be honest. But the coolest thing is that we had Aj Perdomo of The Dangerous Summer join in on this track. We have been such a big fan of his band and we were so excited to have him be a part of it.

“Working with I Fight Fail was really epic, and came in the heat of the pandemic. They sent me their whole EP, and really blown away by what they were making. We tried a couple of songs, and landed on this one. It has such an energy and darkness. They even gave me some good space to scream at the end. Overall great dudes, and can’t wait for the world to hear it.” 

RMB: Is it part of a larger album?  

This will be part of our new EP coming in mid-spring/mid-summer and it’s been a while since we’ve released a grouping of songs. So we’re pumped!!  

RMB: How many songs on the album?

5 new songs will be included on this ep. 

RMB: Is this your first album?

No, we’ve had a couple different records. When starting out we were a lot more mainstream electro pop-rock, and now we have taken it to a much darker side while still maintaining our pop side. 

RMB: Tell us a little about the band.

We are from Ohio cause it’s for lovers, haha.  The band consists of Andy Potter (vocals/guitar)  and Anthony Carter (drums/guitar).

RMB: How long have you been together?

We’ve been playing together for over a decade, so it’s been a while. We got together from different bands and we just love the same style of music. Since then, we’ve just been pushing through and just crafting our sound and style even more.

RMB: Have you had any significant lineup changes recently?

We’ve definitely had some line-up changes and most of our fans either know or haven’t asked. But it definitely goes without saying we never planned or wanted it. But we all get older and life starts to set in a family and responsibilities arise. We have no hard feelings and hope the feeling is reciprocated. 

RMB: What’s the one thing you are most proud of in your career so far? 

We’ve played with some pretty cool bands and we’ve had our music chart on billboard.

RMB: If you had to pitch your music to a potential fan in less than 10 seconds, what would you say?

Me: Hey you have something on your ear!

Label Rec: (swats ear) doesn’t get it.

Me: Hold up I’ll get it! 

Me: slides airpod in ear with fire beats 

Haha, only one could hope that would win them over and get a good laugh. 

RMB: What’s one piece of advice you’ve gotten that you think everyone needs to hear or that has meant the most to you?

Do your job so good that no one can come behind you, and do better! 

RMB: If you could go back in time, what’s a piece of advice you would give to a younger you?   

Start playing different instruments sooner. “You’re going to love it kid”

RMB: What’s coming up next? 

More great songs and cool imagery. We plan on releasing at least two eps this year so get ready for lots of dope stuff, haha
