The Refrain Interview: Bielfield

Kyle Bielfield, is an international recording artist and performer, who’s resume includes being one of the American Tenors and recording with labels such as Sony Music and Universal Records. With a Masters degree in Opera from The Juilliard School Of Music and a Bachelors of Music from New York University, Kyle had his first professional recital engagement in Alice Tully Hall, originated the role of the “Boy Angel” in Du Yun’s Pulitzer prize-winning “Angels Bone”, which was the recipient of a Pulitzer Prize in 2017, and has performed at Carnegie Hall.

He has recently made the switch from Opera to Pop under the name Bieflfied, and was kind enough to speak as part of our Refrain Interview Series:

Refrain Music Blog: Thanks for taking the time to do this interview. You have a new single out now. Tell us about it? What’s it called?

My new single is called “Magnet” – it’s a dance track with an R&B/Funk Feel.

RMB: What’s the single about?

Magnet is about meeting someone unexpectedly.  When stars align just right – and magic can happen.

RMB: What’s the story on how it was recorded?

This song was recorded in a studio in Sydney Australia about 5 years ago.  At first, we loved it – but between figuring out how to finish the production off it took way long – that’s when a Japanese DJ came on board to add the right sound.

RMB: Is it part of a larger album? If so, tell us about that.

There is an album in the works – but for now I am focusing on the single.

RMB: Tell us a little bit about yourself. When did you start pursuing music?

I have been singing my whole life – since I can remember anything.  I was singing and getting paid at the age of 8 – recording and live performance.

RMB: Who are some of your biggest musical influences?

I would have to say Prince has always been a big one.  Beyond him I take inspiration from many – Simon&Garfunkel, Beyonce, Pink Floyd, Adele – the list goes on and on.

RMB: What’s the one thing you are most proud of in your career so far?

I suppose that would have to be having the balls to get out of Juilliard as an Opera Singer and go make pop music with a major label.  Nobody believed in me at that point – but I got there with a lot of grind.

RMB: What’s one piece of advice you’ve gotten that you think everyone needs to hear or that has meant the most to you?

Risk it all when you are young – it will be worth it

RMB: If you could go back in time, what’s a piece of advice you would give to a younger you?

Use people for what they are good at now – don’t try and make them into something you want them to be.  People work with you better that way.

RMB: What’s coming up next for your musical project?

Going to NYC for a new production in a week!

RMB: Anything we haven’t thought of that you want to talk about?

Everybody need to chill the F*** out, smoke something if you gotta, and go with the flow.  Stop putting people into boxes to fit your expectations of the world.  These last few years have been tough – but we have to think to the future and come together.
