Artist Spotlight: Agnes Obel

Simplicity

Sometimes the purest beauty comes from simplicity. Humans tend to overcomplicate everything they do. Agnes Obel has always been attracted to simple melodies. It is for that reason, perhaps, that she has always stood out amongst her peers.

Agnes Obel is a Danish singer, songwriter, and musician. Her two greatest allies are her piano as well as her singing. However, Agnes wrote, played, sang, recorded, and produced the entirety of 2010 debut Philharmonics. A mere eight months later, Philharmonics was certified gold by the Belgian Entertainment Association. Only thirteen months after her initial debut, Agnes won five awards at the Danish Music Awards, including best album and best debut artist.

In the span of ten years Agnes has released four full length albums. She has had quite a lot of
commercial success with her classical folk style. Riverside, a most extraordinary song, has featured in five tv shows as well as used as the theme in mini-series Next of Kin. Familiar, a song unparalleled and rivalless, has featured in the show Dark, a trailer for video game Dark Souls lll, and is a Canadian series theme song.

Agnes tends to sing in hushed but staunch tones. This allows for her piano to express the mood and
sentiments of her songs. Typically slower paced and somber, there is innate purity to every song.
Properly placed cello adds just the right complexity to mostly bare bones structures. Obel is master at displaying how powerful simple melodies can be at the tips of the meticulous composer.
